Trim Clips Directly in Webgate.io – No Editing Software Needed

Hello Webgate.io Community,

We’ve added a new feature that can save you time and extra steps: You can now set in- and out-points directly in a video on Webgate.io and create a new clip from it.

This feature, called trimming, allows you to extract specific scenes from an existing video file – without switching to an external editing system.

How does it work?

Open the playlist containing the video and simply set an in-point and an out-point in the player. For fine-tuning, you can move both points freely using drag & drop to precisely define your selection.

Once you're happy with the selection, click the scissors icon to create the new clip. The trimmed version is saved as a separate file in the file system next to the playlist. It is immediately ready to use – for example, in a new streaming playlist that you can share with external parties as a Directlink.

A typical use case

You want to share only the scenes of a specific actor from a feature film with an agency?

Previously, that meant: Writing out timecodes, downloading the video, importing it into an editing system, trimming, rendering, and re-uploading.
Not only time-consuming – but also error-prone and full of back-and-forth communication.

Now it all happens right on the platform: Fast. Reliable. Reproducible.

Technical details

  • Quality: Clips are exported at higher quality than standard streaming files.
  • Format: H.264 video, audio layout same as source
  • Bitrate: 15 Mbit/s with variable bitrate
  • Resolution: identical to the source file
  • Timecode: extracted from the source file

Trimming is another step towards making Webgate.io your central platform for efficient post-production – right in the browser, without switching tools.

Enjoy exploring the new feature!

Chromecast Playback Now in Beta on Webgate.io

Hello Webgate.io Community,

We’re excited to introduce a new beta feature that makes video playback even more convenient: Webgate.io now supports besides Apple AirPlay also Google Chromecast! This allows you to stream your videos directly from your browser to your TV – no cables, no hassle.

How it works

  • Click the Chromecast icon in the Webgate player to select a compatible TV device from your network.
  • The video is streamed directly via Chromecast – this works smoothly, for example, in the Chrome browser.
  • Many modern TVs already have Chromecast built in, especially those running Android TV.

Smarter playback

  • You can control playback directly with your TV remote – play, pause, and skip all work as expected.
  • When a clip ends, the next one plays automatically.
  • If you select a different clip in Webgate, the TV updates and plays the new video.

Perfect for screenings

Whether you're at a client’s office, in the edit suite, or simply on your couch – Chromecast lets you bring Webgate videos to the big screen with ease. It’s a smoother, more professional viewing experience.

This feature is currently in beta – we’d love to hear your feedback!

Enjoy testing it out!

Push Notifications in Webgate.io – Always Stay Informed

Dear Webgate.io Community,

To make sure you don’t miss any important updates, Webgate.io now supports browser push notifications — even when you're not actively using the platform.

What will you be notified about?

You'll receive updates for any content you’re subscribed to — this can include rooms, folders, playlists, galleries, or boards. You’ll get notifications when:

  • a new clip or file is uploaded
  • a comment or attachment is added
  • new content appears in galleries or board cards
  • a new blog post is published

Note: You must be logged in to Webgate.io to receive push notifications.

How to activate the feature

Scroll down to the Notifications section on your dashboard and enable "Push Notifications".
If the button doesn't appear, notifications may have already been allowed or blocked — you can adjust this in your browser settings. In most browsers, this option is located to the left of the address bar, often under a controller icon.

What happens when you click a notification?

Your browser will open the relevant page directly in Webgate.io — for comments, it will even scroll to and highlight the exact location.

Best regards,
Your Webgate.io Team

Webgate.io Downloader: Now with Subscription Feature!

Hello Webgate.io Community,

The Webgate.io Downloader has already become an essential tool for many of you when it comes to downloading large amounts of data quickly, securely, and conveniently. Features like pause and resume ensure that downloads remain stable and efficient—even for large files. Now, the Downloader is getting even smarter: From now on, you can subscribe to folders and automatically download new files!

How does the Subscription Feature work?

The concept is simple: When you subscribe to a folder, new files are automatically downloaded as soon as they are uploaded to Webgate.io.

  • Only new files: Just like a newspaper subscription, you only receive new files—already existing files are not downloaded again.

  • Perfect for editing suites: If an editing suite regularly receives new DNxHR files via Webgate.io, assistant editors and editors can start working immediately without having to wait for manually started downloads.
  • Full control: You can manage your subscriptions easily in Webgate, and the dashboard displays all active subscriptions at a glance.
  • Lean approach: The download subscription only downloads files, not content from playlists and galleries.

Why is this useful?

With the new subscription feature, you save valuable time and can rely on having all the necessary files ready when you need them. This is particularly beneficial for post-production workflows, as editing and VFX teams can now work even more efficiently.

Best regards and happy post producing,

📢 Audio approvals made easy: Webgate.io now also supports audio files in playlists

Dear Webgate.io Community,

Good news for everyone who uses audio files 🎼 in their approval workflows alongside videos: From now on, audio files can be uploaded directly to playlists and made available for approval!

Why is this important?

Until now, playlists could only play video files. This meant that audio files had to be embedded into a video file before uploading. With this new update, that workaround is no longer necessary. Starting now, all common audio formats, such as WAV, MP3, M4A, and AAC files, can be uploaded directly to playlists and made available for approval.

How does it work?

Direct Upload: Upload your audio file directly into a playlist – just like a video.

  • Waveform Preview: A visual representation of the audio source file is automatically generated to provide a quick orientation.

  • Streaming Format: An optimized audio preview file is created, which can be played immediately in the Web Player.

  • Mixdown for Multi-Channel Audio: If the uploaded file contains more than two channels, a stereo mix is automatically created based on specific processing rules like for video files.

Familiar Webgate.io Features – Now Also for Audio

All well-known playlist features are now available for audio files as well:

  • Controlled Downloads: Define per user role and per Directlink who can download the original file or the streaming file. Info: Streaming files created from an audio file are not optimised for offline playback, but for streaming.

  • Comments: Users can leave comments at specific points in the audio track – ideal for feedback and approvals.

Efficient & Space-Saving

Since the audio streaming file only contains a static image, it renders very fast and requires minimal additional storage space. This makes the feature especially efficient.

This update makes Webgate.io even more flexible - after all, post-production is not just about video, but also about audio. 😉

Try out the new feature and let us know what you think!

Happy post producing,
Your Webgate.io Team

More efficient administration of labels in Webgate.io

Labels are an essential tool in Webgate.io, helping you organize your projects and files even more efficiently. You can freely create labels, customize their colors, and apply them to media and folders to categorize your content clearly. This isn’t new, and many of you are already using this feature extensively.

New: Visible Label Texts with Just One Click

From now on, you can toggle between a minimized label view without text and a label view with text simply by clicking on the label. Previously, the name of a label was only displayed as a tooltip, which in some cases limited clarity. With this new feature, you can now click on a label to make the associated text directly visible. This makes your workflow easier and provides even better clarity. You can choose whether label texts are displayed or hidden by default, and this setting will be saved for you. A double-click on a label takes you directly to label management.

These new features are designed to make your work in Webgate.io even more efficient and enjoyable. Try them out and see for yourself how they can improve your project organization.

Best regards, and have a wonderful summer,

Hello dear Webgate.io community,

We are excited to introduce a new feature that enhances your video viewing experience with Webgate.io even further: AirPlay support! From now on, all Webgate.io projects come with AirPlay functionality by default. This means you can easily stream videos from your iPhone, iPad or Mac to an AirPlay-enabled TV or Apple TV.

How does it work?
With the new AirPlay support, you can enjoy your Webgate.io videos directly on the big screen. Video controls such as play, pause, frame-by-frame navigation, and all familiar shortcuts work as usual from the controlling device (e.g. iPhone or iPad). Currently, the AirPlay feature is only available for the web version of Webgate.io and is not accessible through the iOS app.

Security and Control

If you prefer not to use the AirPlay functionality for security reasons, you have the option to disable AirPlay in the project settings.

Why is this useful?

Work More Efficiently: The New Overlay Player for Quick Previews

Dear Webgate.io Community,

We are excited to introduce a new feature that makes your picture and video reviews with Webgate.io even more intuitive and efficient: the overlay player for galleries and playlists! Similar to the macOS operating system, the file manager of Webgate.io now gives you the option to either use a quick preview with the Space Bar or open the full view with a double-click.

Overlay Player for Playlists
To open the overlay player for a playlist, simply select the desired playlist and press the Space Bar on your keyboard or click the eye icon. The playlist, along with all its clips, will open in the overlay player without reloading the page. You can still use the shortcuts for playlist navigation and enter timecodes. Any existing comments will be displayed in the timeline. Advanced features like commenting or user management remain hidden in the overlay player. To close the overlay, just press the ESC key.

Gallery Preview in the Overlay
You can now also open galleries directly in the overlay. All gallery shortcuts are available to you, and by pressing the Space Bar, the gallery switches to playback mode. Pressing the ESC key will close the gallery again.

File View
Objects such as image files or PDFs that can be opened directly on Webgate.io and are marked with an eye icon can now also be viewed by pressing the Space Bar.

New Roles, Clear Permissions: Your User Management Update

Roles and Rights Management on a collaborative platform for filmmakers and media professionals like Webgate.io should be intuitive, clear and user-friendly. We are therefore thrilled to present some important changes to our roles and permissions system . From now on, the following new standard roles for newly created rooms are available:

Overview of the new roles

Viewer: A Viewer can only watch videos in playlists and pictures in galleries.

Reviewer: This role allows users to review playlists and galleries, comment, and vote.

Collaborator: A Collaborator has similar permissions to a Content Manager but cannot approve content or download source files.

Content Manager: This role corresponds to the previous Room Administrator role. A Content Manager can administer everything within a room, except for creating and managing users.

For maximum flexibility, you can customize the rights of the new standard roles and also edit the names of the roles to adapt them to your individual needs.

What Changes for Existing Roles?

Standard roles and special roles that have already been assigned remain in place and all rights within these roles are retained. The only difference is that the old standard roles ‘Member’, ‘User’ and ‘Room administrator’ have become special roles whose names can be edited.

More Clarity for All Users

With the changes to roles and rights management, we aim to make the functions and permissions of each role clearer and easier to understand for all users. We want to make sure that you know exactly what tasks and authorizations are associated with each role to ensure smooth collaboration within your teams.

Try out the new roles and permissions and see how they can make the user management of your film projects in Webgate.io even clearer and more efficient. We are looking forward to your feedback and to further optimizing Webgate.io step by step with your help.

Happy Birthday Drag and Drop

Exactly 40 years ago, in 1984, Apple introduced the then revolutionary concept of drag and drop with the Apple Macintosh. Mac OS enabled users to move and organise files and folders using drag and drop. This intuitive and user-friendly computer experience has become indispensable today.

We would like to use this anniversary to show you once again the drag and drop possibilities with Webgate.io.

Drag and drop for individual objects on Webgate.io
You can move individual objects such as playlists, files or galleries back and forth between the areas and folders using drag and drop.

Rearranging with drag and drop
Video clips can be moved within playlists using drag and drop, either in the open player or in the browser overview. This also works with images within a gallery.

Drag and drop in the upload window
A selection of files can be dragged and dropped into the Webgate upload window and uploaded. If you drag a folder into the upload window, the local folder structure is also transferred to Webgate.io.

Now new - file upload via drag and drop
It is now also possible to simply upload files to Webgate.io via drag and drop without having to specify the upload type beforehand. If you want to upload objects as a file, drag a folder or files from your browser into the Webgate.io browser window without opening an upload window first. If you want to add videos to a playlist, you can drag videos onto an open playlist and the clips will be added to the playlist. This also works with images that can be added to a gallery.

Happy Birthday Drag and Drop - and happy dragging and dropping with Webgate.io!
